Bird’s Backyard

Series 1 – Episode 1

Stories from Byles Creek Valley

Thoughts and prayers are fine, but if you don’t care and act, what do you expect will change?

In the days leading up to the 12th November 2019 I spent time preparing our house and its occupants for what we were told had the potential to be a catastrophic day for much of NSW. That morning, as I checked everything around the house one last time, I noticed four species of birds were sharing a drink from our pool at the same time. They seemed to know what was coming, and like me, were making last minute preparations.

As I watched their antics, I recorded the following interaction, as described by an observant cockatoo..

Oh yeah, that’s what I’m squawking about!

Good morning viewers, Cacatua Galerita here with the first episode of Bird’s Backyard.

Today’s story begins in the Byles Creek Valley with news of a catastrophic-level fire warning for the Greater Sydney Region, a forecast temperature of 37 degrees, accompanied by strong NW winds and low humidity. It’s 7am on Tuesday 12th November 2019, and it appears the highest priority is to find shelter from the oppressive conditions.

(Whispering) – As I take up position I see a corella. He appears to have spotted the perfect hollow.

He turns and heads in for a closer look.

I’m not sure, but it appears he has company.

Ooh yes, it’s some galah coming in at speed. As the corella hits the brakes, I hope he has his wits about him.

It’s a dog fight of a bird fight! But who will take the prize?

It looks as though the corella will claim victory.

But wait! What’s this?

The galah has a partner who was standing guard nearby and they defend their hard earned home.

Too bad corella, off you go. You needed your team mates for this one.

That’s it for today folks. I’m outta here to find my own safe haven before we all get cooked. I hope to see you all again tomorrow in the Byles Creek Valley for another episode of Bird’s Backyard.
